Alaska USA FCU announces new executive appointments

 Alaska USA Federal Credit Union has appointed five individuals to executive level positions.

Rachel Norman has been selected for the new position of Chief Administration Officer. Norman has been with Alaska USA for more than 24 years, most recently as Senior Vice President, Human Resources.

Norman holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Texas.

Brenda Lind has been promoted to the position of Vice President, Personnel. Lind has been with Alaska USA for more than 27 years, most recently as Manager, Personnel.

Clinton Hess has been selected to fill the position of Vice President, Financial Analysis. Hess has been with Alaska USA for more than 12 years, most recently as Manager, Financial Analysis.

Hess holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Alaska, and a master’s degree in business administration from Alaska Pacific University.

Athar Nazir (shown at right) has been promoted to the new position of Vice President, Special Credits Operations. Nazir has been with Alaska USA for six years, most recently as Manager, Special Credits Operations and Administration.

Nazir holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and master’s degree in finance.

Leisa DeYarmon has been selected to fill the new position of Vice President, Special Credits Collections. DeYarmon has been with Alaska USA for five years, most recently as Special Credits Operations Manager.

Alaska Railroad Catch the Train Photo Contest Winner

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA – Today, Tuesday, Jan. 2, the Alaska Railroad announced David Blazejewski of Anchorage, Alaska as the grand prize winner of the Catch the Train Photo Contest. David Blazejewski’s photograph was selected by the public through online voting via the Alaska Railroad Facebook page. His image of the Alaska Railroad next to the Alaska State Fairgrounds garnered more than 1,000 votes. David Blazejewski will receive the honor of having his photograph featured on the cover of the Alaska Railroad’s 12-month 2019 calendar, as well as $1,500 and the Railroad’s Denali Getaway package, which includes round-trip rail travel for four to Denali National Park and overnight accommodations at the Grande Denali Lodge.

All Catch the Train Photo Contest finalists were selected based on artistic merit, originality, subject and style of the photo submitted. Each finalist will have his or her photo featured as a month of the 2019 calendar as well as displayed in the Alaska Railroad’s 2018 Panoramas onboard magazine. They also receive travel for two on the Alaska Railroad route of their choice.

Alaska USA Mortgage Company Mortgage Loan Originator Steven Kihn received the Associate of the Year award from the Anchorage Home Builders Association (AHBA).

The award is given to individuals that display a proven track record of hard work and dedicated service to the home building industry.

BP is now accepting nominations for the 23rd BP Alaska Teachers of Excellence program. The program honors K-12 teachers and other school staff from public or private schools who have made important contributions to education and their communities. Anyone can nominate a Teacher of Excellence or an Educational Ally for an award by visiting BPteachers.com. The deadline for nominations is February 1, 2018. 

Each BP Teacher of Excellence will receive $500 and a $500 matching grant to their school. The program also recognizes other unsung heroes in the schools, such as Principals, teaching assistants, counselors and others with the BP Educational Allies awards.

Since the program’s inception in 1995, BP has recognized more than 750 Alaska teachers and receives more than 1,000 nominations each year.

This year, $100,000 was generated through the Fuel Your School program to help fund 125 classroom projects, including 62 focused on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), to help connect real-world experiences to classroom learning for 13,339 students at 61 public schools in Anchorage.

In total, $5,898,262 was generated through the 2017 Fuel Your School program, helping to fund 7,391 eligible classroom projects and benefitting 764,817 students in 17 U.S. markets.

Jessica Graham has been selected to fill the new position of Senior Vice President, General Counsel. Graham comes to Alaska USA with 14 years of in-house corporate law experience, most recently as General Counsel/Chief Compliance Officer, Koniag Native Corporation. Graham also clerked for the Chief Justice of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

Tom Newins has been selected to fill the position of Chief Operations Officer. Newins comes to Alaska USA with more than 25 years of executive-level credit union experience, including President/CEO of a credit union with more than $1 billion in assets.

Newins holds a degree in Accounting from the University of Colorado at Boulder and graduated with honors from the Western CUNA Management School.

“Jessica is the ideal candidate to support the continued growth and expansion of the credit union while ensuring that Alaska USA’s regulatory compliance remains exceptional within the industry,” said Geoff Lundfelt, President, Alaska USA. “And Tom’s experience and track record with credit unions present him as the best person to strategically lead our operations management. Anchorage Museum "Yoga in the Galleries"

Yogis of all levels have another venue to practice their yoga – the Anchorage Museum.

Taught by Sami Glascott, a certified yoga instructor and founder of Unravel, LLC, the 50-minute lunchtime sessions are open to yogis of all levels. Participants are guided through various aspects of yoga, including mindfulness, meditation, breathing and moving postures of both yang-style vinyasa and yin yoga.

The Anchorage Museum’s “Yoga in the Gallery” is offered Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:10 to 1 p.m. in the Art of the North Galleries, which opened to the public in September. Participants are encouraged to bring their own mat, although a limited number of mats are available for those who forget.

Each session is $18, museum members receive a 10 percent discount). Museums across the around the globe have added yoga and meditation into their spaces. The Anchorage Museum started the program this fall to expand gallery programming and to take advantage of the Art of the North Galleries grand space and abundant natural light.

Recipients of the Alaska USA Foundation donation include Girl Scouts of Alaska, American Diabetes Association, Special Olympics of Alaska, Children’s Lunchbox, Together, and Boys & Girls Clubs of Alaska.

“These non-profits do an exemplary job of serving different groups in the community,” said Dan McCue, Executive Director, Alaska USA Foundation. “Thanks to the generosity of our members, we can provide the funds to help keep these important programs going strong.”

Incredible Tales from Alaskans Who Helped End the Cold War

The Alaska World Affairs Council invites you to join us for a conversation on "Incredible Tales from Alaskans Who Helped End the Cold War || The Inside Story of Melting the Alaska-Russia Ice Curtain." Featuring Alaskans who were key players in melting the Alaska-Russia Ice Curtain in the mid-1980s. They will discuss how Alaska helped end the Cold War, launching a 30-year era of productive commercial and personal relations across the Bering Strait.

- Jim Stimpfle, a Nome realtor whose stories of interactions with Russia through his Native wife’s family inspired him to engage in “Balloon Diplomacy” and other efforts to open the Strait. Stimpfle has visited Russia many times and helped convince Nome merchants to accept Russian rubles.

- Dave Heatwole, a former Alaska oil company executive who caught the “Russia bug” through the Alaska State Chamber of Commerce and traveled numerous times to Russia as one of the few Alaska businessmen who were successful working there. Heatwole even met his wife working in Russia.

- Elena Kostonko-Farkus, West High School’s Russian language teacher and founder of the Anchorage public school Russian immersion program. Farkus moved to Alaska from Magadan, Russia, in 1992, operated a Russian bookstore in Anchorage and promotes Russian cultural understanding.

-David Ramseur, long-time Alaska journalist and author of a new book, Melting the Ice Curtain: The Extraordinary Story of Citizen Diplomacy on the Russia-Alaska Frontier, moderates the panel discussion.

Alaska USA Federal Credit Union members raise $77,900 in annual food drive

Anchorage, Alaska – Alaska USA Federal Credit Union members contributed $77,900 to support community food banks during the annual Cash for Cans food drive.

The credit union and the Alaska USA Foundation teamed up for the fundraiser, collecting cash donations at Alaska USA branches. Alaska branches collected $49,400, which will benefit the Food Bank of Alaska in Anchorage, Fairbanks Community Food Bank, Palmer Food Bank, Kenai Peninsula Food Bank, MatSu Food Bank, Kodiak Island Food Bank, Homer Food Pantry, Southeast Alaska Food Bank in Juneau, the Salvation Army in Ketchikan, and the Lions Club in Bethel.

“Cash for Cans continues to be a successful fundraiser, year after year,” said Phenie Miller, Senior Vice President, Branch Administration. “It’s all thanks to the generosity of our members. I’m proud to serve a community of people that step up to help others in such a meaningful way.”

Alaska USA Federal Credit Union Announces Executive Appointments

Anchorage, Alaska – Alaska USA Federal Credit Union has appointed three individuals to fill executive positions within the organization.

Joel Swanson has been selected to fill the position of Senior Vice President, Branch Administration. Swanson brings more than 17 years of professional experience, including 10 years with Alaska USA. Most recently he served as Vice President, Electronic Services.

Sonya Watkins has been promoted to the position of Vice President, Branch Administration, Alaska Region. Watkins has worked for Alaska USA for more than 23 years, primarily serving in positions of branch and area management. Most recently she served as Area Vice President, South Anchorage.

Elizabeth Rense Pavlas has been selected to fill the position of Vice President, Electronic Services. Pavlas has worked for Alaska USA for 9 years in positions of increasing responsibility. Most recently she has served as Card Products Manager.



Ravn Recruits Top Airline Professionals to Take Alaska’s Largest Regional Airline to ‘the Next Level’

Alaska’s leading regional air transportation and logistics company announced that effective immediately, it has reorganized its senior management team and installed a simpler and more efficient leadership structure following its successful recruitment of some of the airline industry’s most seasoned and successful professionals.

Ravn’s leadership reorganization will simplify the Air Group’s multi-layered executive management by eliminating several senior roles, and replacing them with a single, group-level officer team that will oversee FAA-approved leaders as well as managing the company’s three separate airlines: Hageland Aviation, Corvus Airlines, and Frontier Flying Services. 

The corporate reorganization and recruitment efforts were led by Dave Pflieger, Ravn’s recently-appointed president and CEO. 

“Operating with a ‘one company’ mindset, instead of three, will turbo-charge Ravn’s ability to capitalize on the vast potential of Alaska’s transportation and logistics market, drive a safety-first and customer-focused culture, and help our team create a world-class airline,” said Pflieger.

Alaska USA Federal Credit Union donates $100,000 to Financial Reality Foundation

Alaska USA Federal Credit Union donated $100,000 to the Financial Reality Foundation, a local non-profit that provides programs to develop the financial literacy of high school students and lead them to achieving their life-long financial goals.

The donation will support the Financial Reality Foundation’s mission to educate 100% of high school seniors in the state of Alaska with Get REAL Financial Reality Fairs. The fairs consist of interactive simulations that allow students to make real-life choices about a post high school career and how to budget for life events like housing, food, and transportation.

In addition to monetary support, Alaska USA acts as host for Get REAL Financial Reality Fairs, which are staffed by a number of Alaska USA employee volunteers, professional partners, and other actively engaged members of the community.

AECOM Alaska announces Matt Narus joins company as Senior Project Manager

AECOM, a premier, fully integrated global infrastructure firm, announced that it has hired Matt Narus to support its Alaska operations as a Senior Project Manager. In this role, Matt will manage projects as well as work with our team supporting business activities for our Alaska operations.

New Subway(r) restaurant to open in Utqiagvik (Barrow) Alaska

(Utqiagvik, Alaska) August 25, 2017—A Subway® restaurant, which is known for its fresh baked bread and offering a healthier alternative to traditionally fatty fast food, is coming to Barrow on August 26, 2017. The new restaurant is located at 1611 Okpik Street and will feature a metropolitan design in the northern most city in the United States and the 11th northernmost public community in the world. The Alaska city formerly known as Barrow, Alaska, changed its name back to its original name “Utquagvik” in December of 2016. The city formerly known as Barrow will house the northernmost Subway® restaurant in the United States.

Subway® restaurants are famous for their made-to-order Footlong and 6-inch submarine sandwiches. They are served on a variety of gourmet breads that are baked fresh in each restaurant throughout the day. Customers create their own hot or cold sandwiches by choosing from a variety of meats, fresh vegetables, cheeses and condiments, while viewing the sandwich being assembled right in front of them.

In addition to submarine sandwiches, the new Subway® restaurant at Barrow will also offer breakfast, a variety of salads, soups, chips, soft drinks, milk and sliced apples.

Many Traditions, One Alaska: Teaching Alaska’s Connected History

The Alaska World Affairs Council invites you to join us for a conversation with Katie Ringsmuth, PhD and Paul Dunscomb, PhD on "Many Traditions, One Alaska: Teaching Alaska’s Connected History." This program will be hosted at 49th State Brewing Co Anchorage, food and beverages at this program will be available for individual order and purchase from 49th State Brewing Co.

Katie Johnson Ringsmuth, PhD, is the sole proprietor of Tundra Vision and teaches U.S., Alaska, and World History at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Ringsmuth is currently working with UAF, NPS, Trident Seafoods, and the Alaska Association of Historic Preservation to collect, interpret, and share the stories of cannery workers from the historic NN Cannery at South Naknek. She has curated several history exhibitions, including Home Field Advantage: Baseball in the Far North and Wrangell Mountain Skyboys. She has authored five publications for the National Park Service, with the sixth—At Work in the Wrangells: A Photographic History, 1895-1966—due out later this year.

Paul Dunscomb, PhD is the UAA Department of History Chair as well as a Professor of East Asian History. He worked in broadcast television for several years before beginning graduate studies in history. He lived in Japan for two years while working on his Ph.D. dissertation. While his initial research focused on Japan’s Siberian Intervention, 1918-1922 and Japanese Imperialism his most recent work attempts to bring not only Postwar Japan but events of the last two and a half decades into focus. His current work examines the crisis in Japanese professional baseball of 2004 as a means to understand the nature of change in Japan during the early Heisei period (1989-2009).

During the month of December the Armed Services YMCA will send a gift shipment to Alaska-based service members deployed during the holidays. These heroes have to spend the holidays overseas, away from their family—this season let’s show them how much they mean to our community!


  • Set a goal! Determine how many of the 3,500 deployed Alaskan troops your organization can help provide care packages to.
  • Decide if you are going to only accept cash donations, or if you are also going to accept in-kind donations if items from the Wish List.
  • Contact the ASYMCA at 907-552-9622 for marketing materials that can be branded with your company logo and personalized for your campaign.
  • Share the marketing materials with your group/ company, employees, friends, and neighbors. Make donation stations easily accessible.
  • If accepting in-kind donation items, be sure they are items off the established wish list. This ensures that everything will fi t in a medium size fl at rate USPS shipping box.
  • Set up your packing date and communicate this date with the ASYMCA so they can staff volunteers on site to help you.
  • The ASYMCA will pick up your boxes and/or donations and make certain that they’re in the hands of deployed military Alaskans in time for the holidays.

Sonosky Chambers New Partners

The Sonosky Chambers law firm is pleased to announce that Rebecca Patterson and Kendri Cesar have become partners in the firm. Rebecca and Kendri are both graduates of Harvard Law School. Before joining the firm Rebecca clerked for U.S. District Judge Sharon Gleason and Alaska Supreme Court Chief Justice Walter Carpeneti, and Kendri clerked for Alaska Superior Court Judge Michael Jeffery in Barrow and worked as committee staff in the Alaska Legislature. Kendri is also a member of the Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska. Both are active in all aspects of the firm’s Alaska Native rights practice.

Alaska USA Foundation raises over $69,000 for nonprofits

The Alaska USA Foundation launched the third annual Members Making Change donation drive, online and in Alaska USA Federal Credit Union branches. The drive raised over $69,726 in donations from the credit union’s generous members. The collected funds will be used to assist nonprofit organizations that provide needs-based programs for children, veterans, and active duty members of the military and their families.

The Alaska USA Foundation was established in 2003 to support 501(c)(3) charitable organizations that provide needs-based services to children, veterans, and active duty members of the military and their families. Since its inception, the Foundation has distributed over $1.5 million to these organizations and is honored to assist those that provide direct services in support of its mission.

When is Citywide Cleanup Week this year?
 Anchorage Chamber Citywide Cleanup Week is officially held in late April to early May throughout the Municipality of Anchorage, which includes Girdwood, Bird Creek, Indian, Chugiak, Eagle River, Birchwood, and Eklutna.
Where can I get orange bags?
The official orange bags of Citywide Cleanup can be picked up at the customer service desk of any Fred Meyer location in Anchorage or Eagle River with a limit of two (2) bags per person. If your organization, group, or business is cleaning up together, please register your team to reserve more bags.
Can I leave my orange bags or trash on the side of the road when I'm done cleaning?
No. There is no pick-up service during Citywide Cleanup Week. All parties are responsible for delivering their collected trash to the Central Transfer Station, Anchorage Regional Landfill, or the Girdwood Transfer Station.
How much will Solid Waste Services charge me when I deliver my orange bags during the week?
Trash in official orange trash bags will be accepted for free disposal at Solid Waste Services facilities during Citywide Cleanup Week. These facilities include the Girdwood Transfer Station, Central Transfer Station, and Anchorage Regional Landfill. Directions and hours can be found on the Solid Waster Services website at Muni.org/sws To be accepted without a fee, orange bags must be delivered separately from other waste. No yard waste will be accepted.
What are "Free Dump Days"?
During Citywide Cleanup Week, Solid Waste Services will accept free loads from 8 A.M. to 5 P.M. on Saturday, April 27 and Sunday, May 6 at the Anchorage Regional Landfill and 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. (same days) at the Girdwood Transfer Station only.
Please Note: Only residential waste is accepted for no fee during the Free Dump Days. All loads must be secured or covered to prevent littering in transit and must not exceed 1,000 pounds. Uncovered loads will be subject to fines.

Regulations & Bag Pick-up Locations

  • All participants in the Anchorage Chamber Citywide Cleanup program are responsible for transporting their collected trash in orange bags to Solid Waster Services via the Anchorage Regional Landfill, Girdwood Transfer Station, or Central Transfer Station.
  • All loads must be secured or covered to prevent littering in transit. Uncovered loads will be subject to fines. Visit Munic.org/sws for more information, or call (907) 343-6250, Monday through Friday, 8 A.M. to 4 P.M.
  • No construction or demolition debris, including remodeling waste, fence panels, decks, or sheds.
  • Children under the age of 14 must remain in the vehicle while at either of the Transfer Stations or the Anchorage Regional Landfill.
  • Please wear gloves, such as latex or nitrile gloves while picking up trash and an orange safety vest if cleaning roadways or intersections.
  • Please be aware of private property boundaries and ask permission to clean in these areas.
  • Super Sweepers will be held from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. on Saturday, April 29. Residents can take their filled orange bags from litter cleanup only to their nearest participating schoolPlease do not bring yard waste or household items to these sites.




  • Payments may only be made with cash or local checks (with a valid driver's license), debit or credit cards are not accepted.
  • All loads exceeding 1,000 lbs will be weighted and charged $58.00 a ton at the Anchorage Regional Landfill. Visit the SWS website for fees at other facilities. Scaled loads require the customer to wear a safety vest.
  • There is a $20.00 charge for appliances containing freon such as refrigerators or freezers. Certifications of freon removal will be accepted in lieu of the fee.
  • The commercial scales will be open at the Anchorage Regional Landfill on May 2 and May 9, and will operate under the regular fee schedule.
  • Double loads (e.g., a full pick-up hauling a trailer) will be directed over the scales and fees will apply.




Residential household hazardous wastes, up to 40 lbs. per day, are accepted at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility located at the Central Transfer Station and at the Hazardous Waste Facility located at the Anchorage Regional Landfill. This limit includes five gallons of waste oil, one car battery, and up to 40 lbs. of household hazardous waster per household per day.

Although the Hazardous Waste Facility at the Anchorage Regional Landfill will be open on Free Dump Days, it is recommended that residents utilize this facility on a regular operating day.





Please note that only two (2) bags per person will be given out at Fred Meyer locations, for large cleanup teams in need of more bags please register your team to reserve large orders.

Super Sweeper


The Anchorage Chamber's Super Sweeper program helps teach school-aged kids the value of a clean city and community service.

This program kicks off the Anchorage Chamber's Citywide Cleanup Week (Saturday, April 28) and motivates the rest of Anchorage to participate in Cleanup Week. Starting at 10 A.M., parents assist their children in picking up trash around their schools and neighbourhoods returning the full bags of trash to the school before 2 P.M.

Every student from each school who collects trash is eligible to win a $50 Fred Meyer gift card.
